untitled – selfportraits 2009

80x100cm

My highly personal work is all about the depiction of inner states, focusing on depression with the help of self portraits. The fundamental meaning of the word “depression” is a psychic despondency which gives rise to symptoms such as the inability to experience joy or sorrow, inner unrest and introversion. The self portraits illustrate which emotional moods result from interplay between depression and society or the environment. The aim is to outline e.g. how to keep the look of joy despite a depressed person very rarely experiencing such an emotion. The vulnerability experienced by a person in such a condition is also openly depicted.
